Sami Samuel Everett, in conversation with Madeleine Dobie

This lecture will present multiple cases taken from Sami Everett's new book The Jewish Maghreb, published April 1, 2026, examining journeys of return among Algerian Jewish populations and their descendants, and exploring how these physical and metaphorical voyages illuminate complex relationships with homeland, memory, and identification.

Dr. Samuel Sami Everett is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton. He is a cultural anthropologist specializing in the historical-colonial and spatial-political dimensions of North African Jewish identification.

This event is co-sponsored by the Middle East Institute, Columbia University's Maison Française, Columbia University's Department of Anthropology, and the Knapp Family Foundation
